This is a very old belief that is many many centuries old. It was believed those which this ability is closer to God, therefore can communicate with God. There is only part truth to this, the truth is the more psychic one is, the closer one is to God. The false is, it is not a gift, but part of our nature.
How is this so? Meditate on this. Plants and animals are also psychic. Plants are known to communicate with one another by science. Which is telepathic communication. Animals are highly sensitive, which you call clairsentients. Therefore, one's psychic nature is nothing more than animals instincts. Keep meditating on this. It helps to let nature be your teacher. Do not accept what beliefs teach, seek the truth for one's self.
